Library Travels
to Historical Society
by Betty Gagne
The
Summersworth Historical Society Program meeting on July 12th featured
Library Director Debora Longo presenting a collection of books
that focus on Somersworth's history.
Carrying a number of tote bags filled with an assortment of heavy
volumes and familiar books, and wearing a pin constructed of 4
Scrabble letters spelling out READ, Debora smiled at the group.
"I have show and tell tonight," she said. She then proceeded
to display each book individually, informing the audience of the
many references volumes and one-of-a-kind books that are part
of a special Somersworth collection located in the public library.
One item of interest was a typed copy of James B. Malley's senior
thesis for Dartmouth College, entitled "The Corporation -
A History of the Great Falls Manufacturing Company." Somersworld
founder Mike Watman had previously tracked down the author of
the piece, who's now in his 80's, and asked for permission to
publish the thesis in installments on the website. "Oh, no,
no, no," the aged gentleman objected. "That paper needs
revision . . . ."
Also in the collection is a compilation of Somersworth men who
served in the Revolutionary War; a survey of Prospect Hill; an
1867 directory for Great Falls, which lists names, addresses and
occupations of the townspeople, along with some very old advertising;
and other books containing embossed stamps indicating that they
were once the property of the Manufacturer's and Village Library.
