We decided to go to the beach for dinner one dreary Tuesday evening and had no special place in mind. We left Portsmouth and took Route 1. Because it was rainy and dreary, we didn't think many places would be that busy. Wrong! Establishment after establishment was on a wait. Even going through Ogunquit at the intersection it was backed up just like on the weekends. So we decided to go to the north end of Wells and try "LITCHFIELDS STEAK AND SHORE" as we had gone by on many occasions and it always looked busy and we had heard that the food was good. They were no different from the other eateries; the place was packed. Fortunately for us, we were a twosome and a table was available for us right away.

The ambiance here is far more than what we expected. The decor is rustic and there are well decorated areas with flowers. The grounds on the outside of "LITCHFIELDS" are as equally done and are visible through large bay windows. This adds so much to the atmosphere inside as well.

Things only got better as we were seated by the host and just began to enjoy the surroundings and our server was on the spot taking our order for a friendly libation. My favorite Bombay Martini was prepared to perfection. My wife chose a glass of the house Zinfandel which she enjoyed very much. We couldn't have just one so a second was enjoyed.

The name "LITCHFIELDS STEAK AND SHORE " would indicate a quality beef and seafood, but we didn't realize how much so. The Angus beef is aged right on the premises with the Prime Rib being touted as the best. The Seafood is as fresh as it can be. In addition, the menu contains a multitude of generous offerings. From appetizers to chowders, salads and desserts, to the daily specials that are created by the in-house chef.

On this visit we opted for a cup of chowder to share and then the wife opted for the chicken special of the evening that was served on pasta. It was a variation of Chicken Marsala. I went for the Prime Rib and asked for it to be charbroiled medium rare.

The vegetable and starch choices were at the top of their game as well. The chicken was as flavorful as my wife had ever experienced - she highly recommends this. Now the only glitch of the evening was that the prime rib was not charbroiled. Before I tell you how it was I would like to explain why I request charbroiled. The answer is it adds flavor that I enjoy and has a tendency to hide some of the blandness that some prime rib tends to be if not prepared appropriately. When the server offered to take it back and get it charbroiled I told her it was not necessary, and that I would be more than happy to enjoy it as served. Little did she know I was going to evaluate this cut of meat. Well, I was very impressed. The flavor of this prime rib was out of this world. There was no doubt in my mind that whomever prepares the prime rib at "LITCHFIELDS STEAK AND SHORE" knows who to do it as good as any I have experienced.

The dessert offerings were too good to ignore. My wife's favorite Grape Nut Custard was a pleasant experience. I opted to try my wife's delicacy and understand why it is her favorite.

Before I give the ratings for "LITCHFIELDS" I will say you get what you pay for here and the prices are at the high end. Dinner for the two of us came to just under $100.00. This said, don't forget we had 2 drinks a piece, appetizers, chowder, entree's, desserts and coffee.

The ratings this week for "LITCHFIELDS STEAK AND SHORE" are a 10 for cleanliness and atmosphere and a 10 for the food quality and a 10 for the service. That is a perfect 30 for "LITCHFIELDS STEAK AND SHORE" in Wells, Maine.

The Phantom highly recommends them for your next dining experience on that special occasion.

Now for this week's recipe:
