Well, here we are in 2004, an important election year. On November 2nd, Somersworth citizens will vote for a President, a U.S. Senator, a U.S. Representative, a Governor, a State Senator, and five (5) State Representatives. So it's an exciting and important time!

For President, it's President Bush versus U.S. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. "Granny D" Haddock takes on U.S. Senator Judd Gregg, the incumbent. In the First Congressional District of New Hampshire, it'll be U.S. House Representative Jeb Bradley looking to retain his seat. He will face a primary opponent, and then, if successful, go against the Democratic nominee.

At the state level, Governor Craig Benson looks for a second two-year term as two Democratic opponents battle each other. Senate District 6 voters from Barrington, Madbury, Nottingham, Rochester, and Somersworth will choose between incumbent Senator Dick Green and Democratic challenger Marlene DeChane. Somersworth and Rollinsford folks will have to fill five (5) seats for State Representative with eight (8) candidates in play. They are: incumbent Roger Berube, incumbent Richard Heon, former Representative Dana Hilliard, Tim Logsdon (the only Republican in the race), Michael Rollo of Rollinsford, incumbent Clair Snyder, Dale Sprague, and former Representative Francis Vincent. The Strafford County district that includes Somersworth, District 2, is smaller now, with just the two communities in the set. The old district, District 67, had 14 seats from several communities, including Somersworth.

If you will be at least 18 years old by November 2nd, I urge you to ensure you're registered to vote. Then, cast your ballot on Election Day. Participatory democracy is nothing to be taken for granted. One vote can make a difference!
