Kids' Koncerts Continue
The Somersworth Festival Associations Kids Koncert
series continues for the next two Wednesdays with Harmony
Station and then Judys Tune Room (formerly Judy Pancoast
& Kid Pop!).
Harmony Station is a group based out of Portland who performs
for both children and adults. As parents themselves, they
realize that kids music does not have to fit into one
particular style. Many of their songs are original compositions
all geared toward children but still making the parents move
to the music. They are highly participatory and all will be
dancing to their sounds. This event is sponsored by Wal*Mart.
The following Wednesday, August 4th,
the series will feature Judy Pancoast. Recently returning
from another trip across the United States where she has performed,
she will bring her old favorites to the event along with some
new songs. The highlight is always Swimming in Jello,
but we are sure you will find new songs to enjoy too. For
more information on Judy, you can visit her website at www.judypancoast.com.
This show is sponsored by the Somersworth Housing Authority.
Shows are free, but donations are gladly and willingly accepted.
Meal deals are also sold onsite at a family friendly
price, so bring your blankets or lawn chairs to sit back for
a night of entertainment. Events are held at the Festival
Pavilion on the grounds of the High School. For inclement
weather, the shows would be brought indoors to the Middle
School gym. Meal deals for $2 featuring a hot dog, soda/juice/water,
chips and cookies are sold.
For more information, please contact the Festival office at

September 2nd
The Homemakers of Strafford County will be offering the Strong
Living Program, a 12-week strength and balance exercise program
for older adults beginning September 2nd.
The program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3
to 4pm in
Rochester. The fee for the class is $25. Leading the class
will be Hanna Jacoby, who has been trained by nationally recognized
experts on fitness for older adults.
The Strong Living Program was developed by researchers and
exercise physiologists at Tufts University and incorporates
years of scientific research and practical field experience
in effective exercise techniques for older adults. Recent
research has shown that strength training can help older adults
to live healthy, independent lives. Strength and balance training
can also improve fitness, mobility, strength and balance,
emotional well being, bone health and help to reduce falls
in older adults. The program is appropriate for both sedentary
and active individuals.

COLLEGE 101: Smart Start to Your Child's Future
College Funding Seminar
For most parents, saving for their children's college education
is a major financial commitment. A savings program is a good
start, but merely accumulating funds is usually not enough.
The type of assets in the education funds, and whether the
parent or the child owns them, can significantly impact the
family's eligibility for financial aid.
Advest will conduct a series of workshops regarding alternatives
for funding
college educations on the last
Tuesday of each month.
We'll discuss creative financial strategies -- how to accumulate
dollars, and who should "own" those dollars. We'll
look at strategies for using "other people's money"--
there are tax breaks you may be able to take advantage of,
and scholarships your child could qualify for. We'll look
at loans, and we'll talk about financial aid.
The speaker will be Robin S. Jarvis, MBA Financial Advisor,
of Advest, Inc. Robin is a Somersworth resident, a member
of the Somersworth Main Street program, and an affiliate of
the Strafford County Board of Realtors. She is a candidate
for the Certified College Planning Specialist designation.
Before Robin began her career in the financial services industry
in 1998, she worked for more than ten years in post-secondary
education in positions such as Director of Recruitment and
Director of Enrollment Management. The sessions are open to
all Somersworth area residents, however, pre-registration
is required due to limited space.
